To validate the document a red letter J, standing for <em>Jude<\/em> i.e. Jew in German, had to be written by the competent offices together with the names <em>Israel <\/em>or <em>Sara<\/em> &#8211; depending on the applicant\u2019s sex &#8211; just below or next to it the real name. People had to pay for the validation.
