December 14, 1943: Carmen Sinigaglia obtains a false identity card under the name Carmela Cimino
Carmen Simchà Sinigaglia was born on August 18th, 1892. She was Marco Giacomo Sinigaglia’s daughter and married Adolfo Almansi, who died still young and left her with two children: Piera Rachel e Cesare.
After the Nazi’s occupation of Italy in 1943, Carmen Sinigaglia succeeded in achieving a false postal IC.
She became Carmela Rossetti, born in Reggio Calabria, Giovanni Rossetti’s daughter and widow of Salvatore Cimino. Here is her fake non-Jewish identity: a Christian name and Southern Italy origins. This ID would be valid until 1946. After September 8th 1943, on realising the impending danger on the two Jewish ladies, Captain Luigi Ortis and Marshal Giuseppe Sulis of the Carabinieri helped her and her daughter Piera. They went with them to Florence Municipality in order to achieve the new document. The two gentlemen gave false evidence and risked their own lives. They were recognised by Padua Municipality as Righteous among the Nations in 2023
